The Library will close on Tuesday 28th September, reopening on Tuesday 4th October 2010.

Access and opening times

The collections are accessible by appointment only; appointments can be made by phone, by email, or by post. The Library is open between 10am and 5pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Any closures will be advertised at the top of this page.

The Library is free to Fellows of the Society, UCL library card holders and all undergraduate students. Fees for other readers are £10 per day per person, or £15 per day for two readers working together on one project.

Disabled access: we have a wheelchair ramp at the entrance to the building, and a lift to the Reading Room. There is a disabled toilet on the premises.

Arranging a visit

Space in the Reading Room is limited so please contact the Librarian at least one or two weeks in advance of your intended visit.

When the appointment is confirmed, you will also be sent a map and directions on how to reach the Library (which is located near Euston Station, not on the main UCL Gower Street site). Please note that the Library office is not staffed full-time and consequently it may be several days before you receive a reply.

Before your visit

If you are able to tell us what information you are looking for or what material you are interested in before your visit we can advise you as to its availability. This is especially important for family history researchers - we can advise as to whether we hold relevant material to try to ensure that you do not have a wasted visit. We may also have to limit access to material which is fragile or contains confidential information.

Using the Reading Room

Visitors are asked to abide by the rules of UCL Special Collections and the Huguenot Library, which are available for consultation in the Reading Room. In particular, please be aware that you should not use pens for taking notes, only pencils, and that the use of laptops is allowed at the discretion of the Reading Room invigilators.

Photocopying: the librarian will photocopy material on request, subject to a small fee. Copies can also be made from the microfilm reader-printer. The librarian may be unable to photocopy fragile or vulnerable materials.

Digital cameras are permitted in the Reading Room, subject to prior agreement between the reader and the librarian.

The librarian will be on hand to offer guidance and provide material from the stacks.

PLEASE NOTE: The library only has one member of staff who can provide access to most of its materials. As a consequence, in the extremely unlikely event of illness or emergency, the library may be forced to close at short notice. If this does occur, we offer sincere apologies for the inconvenience, and will accommodate you at the earliest possible date.
